ANDREA ELIZABETH SCHEELE (1957-2017)

Andrea Elizabeth Scheele passed away suddenly on May 21, 2017 due to a heart problem that developed two years ago. Born in Den Helder, the Netherlands, July 26, 1957, Andrea was multitalented and multilingual. Fluent in French and Italian, in addition to Dutch and English, she lived in several European countries before moving to the United States, where she settled with her husband, Dr. Hans Mulder, in New Orleans in 1996. After completing theatre school in Amsterdam, Andrea pursued an acting career at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique in Paris. Later she earned an MA in British and American studies at the University of Amsterdam. Following a period as a foreign exchange student at the New School for Social Research in New York, she started the New School’s Dutch language department. When her husband finished his residency in pediatrics in New York, they moved to New Orleans, where she first earned an MA in English and then an MSW at Tulane University. This was followed by an LSU fellowship in infant mental health. After Katrina, she worked for a state program for detection and treatment of perinatal depression, and for the last decade she has been in private practice as a psychotherapist. Anyone who met Andrea could not help being struck by her intelligence, curiosity, warmth, and straightforwardness. She will be missed by her loving husband Hans; her older brother, Dirk Scheele, and his wife, Anneke Nollet, and their children, Axel and Martine, of Amsterdam; and her younger brother, Fedde Scheele, and his wife, Marga Witsenboer, and their children, Pam, Jim, and Mees, of Amsterdam. She will also be missed by friends throughout many countries who will always treasure memories of her warmth, vitality, playfulness and insightfulness.
