John Ernest Brockhoeft died peacefully on March 24, 2018. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama on May 26, 1945, the son of Harold Joseph Brockhoeft of New Orleans and Helen Virginia Harden of Zebulon, Georgia. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia A. Samuel Brockhoeft, his brother Wesley Joseph Brockhoeft (Renee), niece Leslie Claire Brockhoeft and nephew Ty Jonathan Brockhoeft.
After attending school in New Orleans he graduated from LSU Law School. His special mentor was Dr. Saul Litvinoff. He then became a law clerk for Justice Walter Marcus of the Louisiana Supreme Court. He had a long career as an Associate Professor of Law in the Loyola University College of Business and served a term as President of the University Senate.
John studied art at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art and was awarded the Gold Medal for color and design theory by the director of the academy, Auseklis Ozols. His favorite medium was watercolor. He exhibited in juried shows locally and nationally and was president of the Louisiana Watercolor Society, Metairie Art Guild, and Westbank Art Guild. Additionally he enjoyed landscape photography and especially loved the national parks.
He was also musically talented. He directed the music for a local production of West Side Story, and composed the music for an original musical, “A Touch of Madness,” performed at the Stella Adler Acting Studio in San Francisco.
An early Apple Computer enthusiast, he created one of the first hurricane tracking programs which was reviewed favorably in a national computer magazine, resulting in sales of the program to television stations in Florida.
Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp 1600 N. Causeway Blvd. at 43d Street on Thursday, March 29, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM, service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, for those so desiring donations can be made in John’s memory to The Alzheimer’s Association, Poydras Home, Loyola University, and the New Orleans Opera Association.
