She never met a stranger. Sandra S. Kasten, age 83 of Metairie, LA., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at University Medical Center.
Sandy was born to the late Harry and Adele Schwartz, August 19, 1937 in Coney Island, New York where she was raised with her later sister, Rhoda Chaiken. Sandy was a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School and attended Brooklyn College.
Sandy married the love of her life, Myron Kasten in 1966. They were married 45 years before Mike’s passing in 2011. Sandy is survived by her son David Kasten, her daughter, Gail Mintz-Messina, son-in-law Dale Messina and granddaughter Megan Messina, her stepdaughter Faith Kasten, stepson Jason Kasten, his spouse Linda and their two children Jessica Kasten and Melissa Kasten-Lemus. Sandy also had four great-grandchildren and a great nephew, Robby Symanski. Sandy is also survived by countless other people who lovingly referred to her as “their other Mother.”
Sandy Kasten was known for her bubbly personality, infectious laugh and winning smile. As mentioned, she never met a stranger. She always greeted people with a hug, a smile, and a kind word. It’s partly why she was such an accomplished businesswoman. For more than 35 years, Sandy and her husband Mike owned and operated Teri Galleries, Ltd. showcasing the works of local and national artists. The couple was known for their benevolence, often donating to various Jewish charities and the WYES-TV art auction to support public television. They were also life-long supporters of the Audubon Zoo and the World War Two museum.
A Graveside service will take place on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Hebrew Rest Cemetery No. 3, 2100 Pelopidas Street in New Orleans, LA. at the corner of Frenchmen Street. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hadassah, the World War Two museum or the Wounded Warrior Project.
