William John Meyer III

January 24, 1934 ~ March 9, 2024 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Tribute

William J.  Meyer, III, also known as Papa Choo Choo and Willie, entered into his Heavenly home the morning of March 9, 2024. Born in New Orleans, LA on January 24, 1934 to the late William and Adeline Meyer.

Growing up during the Great Depression, gave him an appreciation for, as he would say, “the things you do have.” After he graduated from Warren Easton High School in 1951, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served in the Korean War. After serving in the Airforce, he was employed with Kansas City Southern Railroad as a Switchman for 44 years. Before he retired, Willie helped restore the Original Engine 745 that was in the Audubon Park.

Willie spent much of his spare time with the American Legion, helping build community support for fellow veterans and their families. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, trains and all things railroad. The neighborhood knew him for his creole tomatoes, oranges, satsumas and green eggplants.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Millie “JoAnn” Meyer; children, Joseph, Darcel, Millie and Darren; sister, Mary; 11 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Those who knew him can agree that he was a gentle soul who made everyone feel loved. He will be greatly missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Oscar; 2 grandchildren, Heather and Luis.
